Today we travel from Valdez to Whittier by ferry (taking our car too) and then by road to Seward. Valdez is in the northeast part of Prince William Sound. It is surrounded by the Chugach Mountains, the tallest coastal mountains in the US rising from sea level to 7000 feet. It is also the most glaciated mountains in the north west. This morning we boarded the ferry for Whittier with grey skies and light rain prevailing. Surprisingly the trip was very calm and although the grey skies continued the scenery was still interesting. The famed majestic sights of Prince William Sound was not to be today. The islands appearing from and disappearing into the mist made for some interesting shapes on the horizon. Seals, sea otters and sea birds accompanied us on the trip. Once off the ferry we entered the Whittier Tunnel (two and half miles long, a fair amount of traffic which took about 10 mins to get through). It's a oneway tunnel that conveys trains and traffic. On the road again we stopped to view the Portage Glacier, small icebergs were present in the lake below the glacier. We continued to Seward checking in to our accommodation,a three bedroom apartment at Harborview Inn.
