Leaving Fairbanks today to travel to Tangle River. We are traversing the Richardson Highway. More magnificent but entirely unexpected scenery. Across the tundra plains the Alaskan Ranges came into view. Snowcapped peaks dominated the horizon while in one section, named the Rainbow Range, shale avalanche areas bordering the edge of the road made an impressive sight. Other places of interest we stopped at were the Knotty Shop in Salcha and North Pole where we visited Santa's House in Santa Claus Lane. The town has all the trimmings, candy cane light posts, garlands and streets named appropriately like Frosty the Snowman, St Nicholas Drive, Dancer Lane and Blitzen the Reindeer. Christmas decorations were around every corner and hanging from every post. Lunch was had beside Lake Birch which typified the scene of an American lake - spruce trees down to the water's edge with the jetty with the boat tied up while nestled among the trees were log cabins. Further on we pulled off into a salmon spawning area and were delighted to be able to see wild salmon in the creek. KFC again supplied authentic Alaskan accommodation at Tangle River with the outlook from the dinner table being that of a tranquil lake surrounded by mountains. A most beautiful drive to end the day.
