Days 423-429, 9-15 Aug '15, Peace & Tranquility. For anyone who's been thinking that James and I are having just too much fun... (you know who you are)... you'll be pleased to know we've had a quiet week. With Turkey next on the radar (come 30 Sept) we are being muy economico during our remaining time in Spain. On Tuesday we saved €2 by walking to the market instead of taking the bus. Didn't stop for a bite and a drink and that saved €6. Sounds like small beer - but the €8 covered the cost of all our fruit and veges for the week - (kilo mushrooms, kilo nectarines, 2 kilos tomatoes, kilo figs, kilo grapes). Not quite in the economico spirit, but enjoyable nevertheless, we went out for dinner in town on Thursday night. We tried valiantly (researched on Tripadvisor) to come up with a new restaurant - there are, afterall 600 in Fuengirola, but ended up at our old fave - La Casa Rustica. We are all about the most bang for the least buck and this is undoubtedly an amazing restaurant - lots of luscious sauces available - mushroom, pepper etc and whilst Spanish food and restaurants are incredible... they just don't do sauce - big chunks of meat and fish - si Senor, sauce? not so much. So that was a lovely evening out and we strolled along the beachfront for an hour or so after. By Saturday it was time for another outing and we hoofed it down to the flea market - very limited purchases indeed - found a sunfrock for 50 cents! Just when we thought things couldn't get any cheaper. The plan was to visit an internet cafe and finalise our tax paperwork for the year and have a sit at a little tapas bar. James and I were both foiled as it was in fact a Spanish national holiday. The Virgin's Assumption? Ascension? Apparently. So whilst the market and some cafes were open, 90% of business were not - presumably in church. Our notice of this holiday was lost in the mail. So we don't get caught out again (and because we wanted to know why everyone was playing hooky) we looked up the holiday register and discovered no more holidays until after we leave. From the "Learn Something Every Day" file, today we discovered Honeysuckle. Native to the Northern Hemisphere which is why we've only ever smelled the scent on toiletries. A climbing vine near the pool has just come into flower and the heady, sweet scent of the flowers was positively intoxicating. So today I made a guess that it was Honeysuckle and carted a flower home for wiki purposes. My guess was correct! Something learned for the day. Well that is us at the end of a very peaceful and tranquil week. Next week may well be another hive of activity. If nothing else, need to visit the darn internet cafe again and also start planning our adventure in Turkey as we have 4 weeks to gallivant prior to starting our next housesit. Remember to take time out and smell the Honeysuckle.
