Days 409-415, 26 July-1 August 2015, Fuengirola, 10th Anniversary...
We're not at the half way point of our Spanish stay for another couple of weeks - which is hugely reassuring as we're having so much fun. Packing on the other hand is not going to be much fun as we keep finding absolutely necessary treasures at our market jaunts. Tuesday was fruit and vege day as usual and half the fridge is still harbouring a massive water melon. That's not the problem... it's the new (for me) sun frock for €1... or on Saturday... the new handbag €1.50... the Spanish leather sandals €2. James has a wonderful theory that if I buy something new, then something I already have has to go. Dreadful theory - I like having new stuff and keep the old stuff too! Shopping aside, Tuesday evening we took the bus up the hill to our local white village, Mijas. They are having a Tapas Route and evening entertainment every Tuesday and Thursday through July and August. A glass of wine or beer and a tapa for €1.50... perfect excuse for a bar crawl. Made it to three places then enjoyed the Flamenco dancing for a while and on to the last bus home. Wednesday and Thursday ended up being our "weekend" - hot and humid and perfect weather to catch up on movies via the smart TV and Youtube. Friday we had a touch of morning cabin fever and it was cloudy (which is rare in these parts). We walked down to the beach and enjoyed the cool breeze. Whenever we take the bus home we pass a little cafe that we mean to try... Well it was 15 minutes until the supermarket was going to open so we finally tried a new cafe. Lovely stuff - coffee to put hairs on our chests and a typical Andalucian breakfast - toasted roll with tomato & garlic smush and olive oil. Thus fortified we sorted out the groceries for the week and tootled home on the bus for a rest. A much needed rest as we were planning a posh dinner and evening out. Splurging in fact on a seafood feast at a beach front bar or "chiringuito". It was fabulous - couldn't think of a nicer way to celebrate our 10 year anniversary than sitting with an ocean breeze and the light of the full moon stretching across the water. And not just any full moon either - a blue moon and the last scheduled until 2018. (A blue moon is where two full moons occur in one month... or "moonth" as the cycle of the moon was once known). We enjoyed our dinner immensely... but over-ordered a touch and have enjoyed seafood for the last two nights as well. Incredible. Speaking of incredible. Can you believe that with the wealth of forensic science methodology available on TV (CSI, CSI Miami, CSI Las Vegas etc), that this information is not being learned by heart by the criminal classes and those who aspire to be? This week, just along the coast, an 83 year old woman was detained by police in connection with the death of her husband, also 83. The Guardia Civil had been called to the couple's home after the husband suffered serious head wounds from a fall, apparently off the sofa where he had been resting. He died in hospital the next day. The only witness was the victim's wife. A fall indeed thought those canny Spanish coppers. Blood stains were found in the home which did not correspond to where the man was found. Blood was also found on one of the victim's crutches (though an attempt had been made to wipe it off - obviously not by the victim). The woman has been remanded in custody. And that, dear friends, is why it's important to watch a reasonable amount of movies and telly... just never know when you'll learn something handy. But really? His own crutch? Seems a bit harsh... who knows... after 83 years perhaps she finally decided he had it coming. Heaven help her cell mates. Week ahead? Definitely staying away from pensioners with crutches. Definitely looking forward to Thursday night's Bon Giovi tribute show up in Mijas. Definitely trying not to buy anymore clothes, bags or shoes. Or for that matter watermelons.
