Days 210-211, 8-9 Jan '15, James's 50th Birthday Dinner in Enniscorthy then a Ferns, Gorey & Coastal Drive. Wow. Being "early retireds" is just so much more convincing when at least one of us is 50 - and now we're there! Had a restful day around the house and then we all got gussied up and headed out into freezing cold rain and wind for a fab 3 course dinner at Treacy's Hotel. Without a lot of fuss or hoo-ha and without a big crowd, the three of us agreed it felt just like any other day... except just so incredibly special that we were together as family - snug, warm, dressed up to the nines and enjoying a lovely meal together. Ahhh. In honour of the seafood chowder entree, we had a bottle of Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc and headed home at a very respectable hour. Post-birthday day we rugged up and headed on a drive through Ferns, snuck through an unlocked gate and explored the ruined castle. It's simply that time of the year, but a lot of heritage properties are closed in winter (or, as we say, "FOTM" / F**k off till March). Continued on to bustling Gorey for a walk on the Main Street and a coffee & cake. Then out to the wild and woolly coastline before looping home through the countryside. We kept encountering mini-traffic jams with loads of people and children on the roads. Couldn't figure it out til we realised we were passing schools at 3 pm. Ohhhhh. There are seriously a lot of children here - parents with 4-5 little ones walking home were very common. Home to the doggies and out for a walk in the rain and wind. Only the little puppy Peanut is bothered by wild weather - the wind scares her. Probably understandable since it can blow her over.
