Day 77: Fraser Island
Yesterday he steered a boat and today he co-piloted a plane. That is the adventurous life of my 7 year old.
Today we took a tour of Fraser Island. We had initially planned to drive ourselves and spend the day but decided to do a tour and let someone else drive for us.
We chose the premium tour so there were fewer numbers. Highlights included central station which also included a rainforest walk where our tour guide greeted us at the other end, the pinnacles, Eli creek, Meheno shipwreck and Lake McKenzie with lunch and morning tea provided by Eurong Station. There was only 20 of us on the tour so it felt quite personal.
Darren and I came to Fraser Island in the late 90's and camped here with his cousins Corinne and Dana aswell as their partners Chris and Paul. This was obviously before any of us had kids and we enjoyed bare basics camping and loved it. It's been fun returning and reminiscing of the fun time we had here then.
The added bonus to today's tour was a scenic flight over the Island. It was an additional extra but I convinced Darren to do it. Brandon was lucky enough to score the co-pilots seat, so sat up the front with the head phones on and held onto the controls. He thought that was the bees knees.
The wind was a little cool today so swimming wasn't exactly ideal. One of the highlights when we camped here last was floating down Eli Creek, but it was a little too cool today so we had to settle for walking the board walk along side it.
The cool temperature didn't stop Micaela and Brandon from swimming in Lake McKenzie. Admittedly the water itself was warm but the wind chill was freezing. I sat at the edge and cleaned my engagement ring in the basilica sand. It brought it up quite nice but not perfect, I need a little brush or something to get into the groves. It's a lot cleaner than it was though.
Our tour guide was not intimidated by the uneven sandy terrain, driving the bus with full gusto. We were lifted from our seats on more than one occasion. We sat at the back which is the bumpiest part so we all felt a little queezy at one stage or another. Darren did not enjoy that part one bit. None of us were sick though.
We had a great day but it was a long one. We were picked up at 7.30am and dropped back home again at about 6pm. The sunset added another highlight to the long day. We watched the sunset from the barge on the return journey.
We returned exhausted with dinner being toast or noodles.
Tomorrow, after an easy morning, we are heading further south to the sunshine coast.
