Day 48: Hughenden to Charters Towers
The first task this morning was to ring Nana and wish her a happy birthday. Darren was such a good son, after stressing all day yesterday reminding himself not to forget, he rang his mum at 8am with a birthday greeting. We spent a combined half an hour on the phone with her telling her all about our trip so far and hearing all the news from home. Happy birthday Nana, we hope you had a great day! Xxxxx
Once off the phone we got ourselves organised to depart Hughenden. Even though we slept in and spent time on the phone we were still on the road just after 9am. We've got it down to an art form :-).
We arrived at Charters Towers at about lunch time and were greeted by the owners David and Marni. They are lovely people. We talked to them for a while, asking their experience on certain aspects of the business. They remembered Pete and Jo from their stay here a couple of months ago.
Before venturing into town to have a look around, we set the van up, did some washing and ate lunch.
Charters Towers was populated in the late 1800's due to a gold rush. The wealth of the town encouraged extravagant architecture, a lot of which has been maintained or restored offering the town a historic appeal.
We ventured up to Tower Hill which has a great lookout with 360 degree views of surrounds. We returned tonight for a theatrical performance titled Ghosts of Gold. It was a really good one man performance combined with still shots of the area back in it's gold rush days and a short film explaining the history of it all. Hard to explain, but we enjoyed it.
By the time it finished it was 7.30pm so we treated the kids to Maccas for dinner.
Tomorrow we are heading towards the Atherton Tablelands area. Not sure exactly where yet, but we are hoping to base ourselves central to the many waterfalls as well as the Innot hot springs.
