Day 49: Charters Towers to Undara
We ventured off this morning with only a vague idea of where we would stay tonight. After farewelling our gracious hosts, Marni and Dave, we hit the road heading in the direction of the Atherton Tablelands.
We decided to travel the inland route which would have been beautiful had it not been for all the roadworks that delayed our journey.
Due to the delay and the fact I was really tired, we decided to stay at Undara for the night and visit the lava tubes. There were no powered sites left so we took an unpowered site.
After having lunch we went on a tour of the lava tubes. Our guide was great and very entertaining. The lava tubes are a sight to be seen but I was a little underwhelmed. I wouldn't consider them a thing of beauty but rather a marvel of nature.
Our guide had a little bit of a joke with Brandon so Bran considered him his best friend after that, walking up front with him making sure he maintained the same pace as the guide. Then back on the bus he sat up the front with the guide. Brandon likes to make new friends!
After dinner we ventured to the campfire area where we were treated to a slideshow and talk about space. Whilst the presenter was not an expert he was very knowledgable and knew a great deal more than me about the galaxy.
The place we are staying at is called The Undara Experience and is a campsite/tour area set up solely for the purpose of viewing the lava tubes. The business was started by the Collins family 6 generations ago and is still owned and operated by them today.
Tomorrow, before we depart, we are doing a walk around a dormant volcano. We are then heading to Millaa Millaa.
