Day 50: Undara to Millaa Millaa
I do believe we found one of Australia's best kept secrets! We are fast discovering that there is so much to see and do in this beautiful country of ours that 14 weeks just isn't enough time to see it all.
Our morning started with a hike to the top of Kalkani Crater. Kalkani crater is one of many dormant volcanos in the Undara area. Undara is a dormant volcano that exploded hundreds of thousands of years ago and created the lava tubes. Nobody is allowed near Undara volcano so Kalkani is the next best thing.
The 600m walk to the rim of the crater is a little steep but the walk around the rim was fairly easy. The height offered a great view of the surrounding area and many of the other 125 dormant volcanos.
Walk complete we finished packing up the van and continued to Millaa Millaa. The landscape we drove through slowly transitioned to lush rainforest. It's absolutely beautiful.
We checked in to the cutest little park where the owner not only runs reception but has a hair dressing salon set up in a room to the side. The park itself is clean and well maintained, though the amenities blocks won't win any style awards. Our site is lovely, surrounded by rainforest.
After lunch we ventured out to explore some of the waterfalls in this waterfall country. The first was Souita Falls. We nearly drove straight past it except for Darren noticing a small sign out the corner of his eye. We parked by the side of the road and embarked on the short walk down to the falls. It was a great adventure with lots of rocks to climb over but let's just say not everyone got back in the car with their shoes dry, not everyone had dry clothes. We'll just leave it at that though.
Next stop was Pepina Falls. The literature claimed that platypus are often seen at these falls, unfortunately we weren't lucky enough to see one today.
We continued on and decided to visit the visitors centre in Ravenshoe, which also doubles as the cultural centre. The kids and I looked around the cultural centre whilst Darren armed himself with more literature on the area.
After the visitors centre we proceeded onto Little Millstream Falls before continuing onto Millstream Falls. Millstream Falls are apparently the widest falls in Australia. They are really pretty but I imagine they would be quite spectacular in the wet season.
By the time we finished at Millstream Falls it was about 5.30pm so we returned to the van for showers and dinner.
Tomorrow we are doing a few more things in the area, after cleaning the car, van and doing more washing.
