Day 47: Hughenden
After a few days of constant driving an easy morning was the order of the day. So we got up after waking up naturally. Darren had a restful nights sleep last night which means I did too.
The plan was to visit Flinders Discovery Centre and Porcupine Gorge, so after doing a load of washing and having breakfast we set off on our way.
First stop was the discovery centre which houses the dinosaur museum and the information centre. We armed ourselves with pamphlets on the area and entered the museum for a browse.
The museum, similar to Richmond, illustrates discoveries from the local area. Whilst it was very good within it's own right, I preferred the museum at Richmond.
After completely viewing the museum we of course had to visit the gift shop. The kids still have money burning a hole in their pocket. We then visited a local cafe for lunch before making our way to Porcupine Gorge.
I have to admit I had very little expectations of the gorge. After visiting Katherine Gorge I thought this would pale in comparison, but it was quite spectacular in it's own right.
The first view was from the lookout before we proceeded further down the road to partake the walk down into the gorge. We packed the swimmers and commenced the 1.2km trek into the gorge.
The walk down, whilst steep and rocky was pretty easy. We relaxed in the gorge for over an hour, feeling like we were the only people left in the world, enjoying swimming, skimming rocks and just playing.
The walk back was a little harder, due to it being steep and rocky. The 27 degree temperature didn't help either. The cool down we had experienced from swimming in the icy cool water wore off pretty fast. But we made it, with only Ethan complaining.
That was pretty much it for our day. Tomorrow we are staying at Charters Towers, we rang ahead today to make a reservation!
