We had a very slow start to the day this morning. Must have been the soothing effect of the lovely massage yesterday.
We eventually made our way to the Cango Wildlife Ranch which has a conservation program for a lot of endangered species. There was a lot of us looking a different animals and asking 'what IS that'.
After a quick spin around and checking out the different animals in their enclosures we stopped off for some lunch. What do you eat when your in a ranch dedicated to animal conservation? An ostrich burger and a crocodile burger of course. Both of which I'm sure are nowhere near becoming extinct and tasted delicious. Our waitress assured us that, to the locals, eating ostrich is just like us eating chicken and not just something that misguided tourists eat thinking it is local cuisine. Funny though, she didn't give me the same reassurance about the crocodile.
So with our bellies full and Elstub more than a little concerned that her hands and breath now smelt of food they let us go into the enclosure with some 8 - 9 month old cheetah cubs. They were so cute and we got some really great photos of us with them to add to the slide show night. They were all so placid and didn't seem to care that there was a distinct smell of crocodile burger on our breath. They purred really loudly and were quite comfortable having us in their space which was lucky for us.
The handlers then took us over to the white bengal tiger cubs which were 5 months old. They had 3 cubs in the enclosure and they used to let you go in with all 3 but they are getting too big and apparently know that they can over power us mere mortals so we only got to go in with one but what an experience. They had a little plastic bottle on a rope that it was playing with while we were there so it didn't really pay us too much attention but we did get to sit with it and pat it for quite a while. Maybe the tigers have a greater appreciation for burgers than cheetahs do because Elstub got a tiger bite on her left rib. So she now has some pretty heavy bragging rights. She has faced off a great white, survived a tiger bite and eaten a crocodile.
We then headed back to our little log cabin for another round of sunning ourselves on the deck. Elstub took a little nap in the sun to recover from the trauma of her tiger bite and I finished the book - we need to talk about Kevin, which is seriously disturbing.
Can you believe that we did not get any cheese and crackers in our room this afternoon, talk about seriously disturbing. And we've finished our port and it's not been replaced. Time to move on tomorrow I think.
