Our romantic ideal of living forever in this little log cabin with fireplace has come to an abrupt end. It is freezing in these things at night. We had the heater cranked up to 30 degrees, the electric blankets on and the little heater blowing in the bathroom just to try and stay warm. Looks like we will be coming home after all.
After a shower this morning to help us warm up we made our way to Cango Caves. Think Janolan Caves but on a grander scale. There is an adventure walk you can go on where there are sections of the cave that are only 27cm's high. We felt that we had exceeded our adventure quota this week with the shark diving so we opted for the standard walk where all the areas where high enough for me to go through on Elstub's shoulders. I wasn't allowed to test the theory though.
We were glad we took this tour because at the end our guide told us the story of a larger woman who insisted on being allowed to go on the adventure tour and not be discriminated against because of her size. Long story short, she was too big, got stuck and was stuck down there for 11 hours with the rest of her tour group trapped behind her until paramedics could get her out using ropes, pulleys and liquid paraffin. As we were leaving they had cut outs of the news reports of 'the incident' stuck on the wall near the exit. I would die!!
We then took a drive through the Swartberg Pass. It was just stunning, and more than a little bit hair raising at times. It is a dirt road that they have built along the side of the cliffs and the views can not be beaten. We had seen tourist information that had explained it as an engineering marvel and at first we scoffed but the scoffing turned to nods of appreciation after each hair pin turn. Elstub's knuckles where getting whiter and whiter on the steering wheel especially when there was an oncoming car that we had to pass. But of cause she got us through there like a local. We had a brief stop at the town of Prince Albert which seems to close for lunch between one and two so nothing was open. We then drove to De Rust to see the waterfall before coming back home.
All that driving around takes it out of you so we strolled down the road and both got a lovely neck and back massage to elevate the tension of our day. It seemed rude not to when the conversion rates here mean we only paid $24.50. Not each but for both of us.
On return to our cabin the owner of the place we are staying at had lit our fire and left us some lovely cheese and crackers on the kitchen table. So as I type we're back in front of the fire, sipping port, eating cheese and crackers and we're never leaving.
