A great white shark tried to eat us!!
We met up with the dive guys at 10am this morning and when we got there we were both just a little bit nervous. They fed us up with some breakfast and tea and coffee and then we were on the boat. We drove out for about 30 mins and they picked up the cage they left in the water earlier this morning. They told us they were going to give us a safety briefing which was them telling us where our life jackets were and not to get in the water unless they told us to. So we got into our wetsuits, they strapped weights around our shoulders and told us to get into the cage.
The water wasn't as cold as I was expecting but cold enough. There are hand holds along the top of the cage so you hold yourself up using these and resting your knees on a bar inside and when the guys yell "down, down, down" you let go and sink to the bottom of the cage because a shark is coming. It was really awesome. Most of the sharks passed by and don't really react to you but once we had been in there for about 15 minutes a shark came right up to the part of the cage that we were in with it's mouth open and we both just about died. I don't know if I tried to squeal or if in the shock of it all I opened my mouth too early but I swallowed a massive gulp of sea water. Yummy!!
There were about 4 or 5 sharks around our boat and we got to stay in the cage for about 30 minutes. Such a cool experience. Once we got out of the cage both of us had to quickly rush to the other side of the boat to share our breakfast with the sharks. We can now say that we have vomited on great white sharks. I guess we will never be sailors after all. We could still see them circling around the boat when we were on deck. It was amazing. The dive company films a video while your out there and there is footage of us on the boat and in the cage but then we are mysteriously absent, our next appearance we are both looking very unwell.
On the return trip they took us past Dwyer Island which is home to a colony of 60,000 seals. They were really cute but man they stank!! My poor tummy could take no more so my excitement at the time was limited. It was such a shame that we both got sick so we were too unwell to go back in the cage a second time. We weren't really able to appreciate the experience but we both thought it was awesome. I definitely recommend it if you find yourself out this way and don't get seasick.
We finally made it back to dry land. They fed us up again with more muffins, hot veggie soup and a cup of tea and then we left clutching our copy of the video. And you thought we would just be boring you with photos!!
Back in the car and we're off to Montagu. It is a really cute little town and nowhere near the security on the houses like Cape Town. We are staying at a resort called Avalon Springs which has some natural hot spring pools attached. We were warned by our lonely planet it was a bit 70's and they weren't lying. It is so funny. It's like we have been sucked into a time warp but they seem so proud of it and the guy at reception gave us the laugh of the day.
The hot springs were just the thing to help us get over our early morning trauma so we soaked in there for as long as we could cope. We are still waiting to feel 100% again after our little stomach cleansing this morning so it's an early night again tonight.
Weather report - stunning day today. There was hardly a cloud in the sky and quite warm. Hope this sticks around.
