25 May is Africa day apparently so we thought there would be celebrations similar to our Australia Day but it's not so. They were talking about it on the news this morning but if we didn't hear that we would never had known.
We got a driver today to take us around and see the sights which is a lifestyle we could become accustomed too. First stop was Hout Bay. They were some cute little markets near the water that we took a look through and we got to see a couple of seals playing in the water which was a bonus. Saved us some bucks going on one of the seals tours. Next !!
Then we drive through Chapman's Peak which is supposed to have lovely views of the coastline, I wouldn't know, it was so foggy we could barely see a foot in front of us let alone any views. Carry on please driver.
Next stop was the ostrich farm. We had a quick browse around the shop, gasped at the prices of the ostrich leather goods, brought some ostrich biltong and politely declined the offer of a tour of the farm. I felt big and brave enough standing a good 5 meters from one of them as we walked in thank you very much.
Then we drove on to the Cape of Good Hope which is the most south-western point of Africa and took a few photos. We decided to do the walk between here and the Cape Point lighthouse but as soon as we got about one third of the way the heavens opened up and it started bucketing down. By the time we made it to the lighthouse we couldn't see anything and we were soaking wet. Thankfully our driver was waiting for us in the car park with the heater running. I could get used to this. Not the rain ... the driver. It was so wet there weren't even any baboons around and apparently they are usually all over the place.
Next stop Boulders Beach to see the penguins. We got our first glimpse of them as we were walking along the boardwalk to the beach. There were loads of them. Some had tiny little babies with them which were so fluffy and cute. We laughed so much watching them run through the bushes with twigs in their beaks to make their nests. We spent as much time there as we could before the rain got too heavy and we had to leave.
We then went on to Simon's Town which is a cute little town with nick knack shops and cafes. But the rain was now torrential so we just grabbed a coffee and headed home.
This is our last night in Cape Town so we decided to make the most of it and go to a nice restaurant. Our driver and the owner of where we are staying both suggested the same place and the food was fantastic. Be prepared to hear about the bread when Elstub gets back. She will be talking about that bread for years to come so I don't want to steal her thunder.
Tomorrow we are off to Gansbaai
Weather report - overcast and crappy all day with periods of torrential rain usually whenever we got out of the car.
