Just a quick journal entry as I'm in the Internet cafe andthere is bloke here who I think may want me to become his 6th wife so need to scarper (lol CMC girls!) soon...
Anyway what have I been doing, well on Wednesday afternoon after Kakum I went to one of the orphanages where some of the girls work. One ofthe girls was leaving the next day so the kids put on a traditional dance show and did loads of singing etc, it was amazing to see and very sad as she had been there since before christmas! The kids were all surprisingly happy all things considered. I think I will go there once a week or a fortnight to help out as well as go to one of the schools where some of the volunteers work. I am also going to try and get involved with the student newspaper which they have on campus.
Thursday and Friday were quite normal days really, ATL in the morning to read the news and chat, oh except of course the fact that it poured with rain on Friday! Saturday we went to go to Elmina Beach Resort which is a hotel with a really nice pool but guess what... they were cleaning it on a Saturday of all days!! That's Ghana for you! We went to Coconut Grove instead which is where some of the pictures on here are from. Saturday evening I went to a discussion programme at ATL which was talking about the sin of sex before marriage! Very interesting to see someone else's viewpoint which mainly consisted of 'if you have sex before marriage it will ruin your relationship'! Umm... Very funny when I then had to explain that things were a little different in the UK!!
Sunday a few of us went to the market and tried to do some shopping but we kind of forgot that most shops, actually places that vaguely resemble shops, shut on Sundays here! The market was still open but that what it so not very successful but I have the next 6 months to make up for it...
Yesterday we were supposed to be having a movie night at our house so on Sunday afternoon we went to the local shop and bought a crate of bottles, like Coke, Sprite and Fanta ready for it, very funny carryign them to our hosue as all the kids were like 'wow, obruni obruni!' Then we found out yesterday afternoon that our region was going to be having lights out which means no electricity after 6pm until about 5/6am!! So the movie was def out of the window and we had to take the crate of empty bottles back to the shop in the evening, somehow the concept of Anna and I drinking 12 bottles each didn't seem too appealing so we had to beg the woman in the shop to let us keep them for another day, she did as we made friends with her children!! It is SO annoying when it's lights out here and there is NO electricity at all and you have to do everything by torch light. We always make sure we go out when it is going to happen as otherwise we would have to go to bed at about 7pm!! It was SO hot last night as the fan is electric, my hankerchief is definitely my most invaluable piece of kit in this heat!! It cost me about 30p and doubles as a fan as well as a mop lol!!
Well, I'm glad to report that it hasn't rained here since Friday and hopefully won't as I need to go home and do my washing.... Definitely not my favourite activity and it always gives me a headache as well, I wish I could just pay my family to do it!
So movie night is now tonight instead of the quiz we usually have and this week the drinks are on Anna and I, can you imagine 4 pound for 24 bottles!!!
Mum and Nan, I promise to upload pictures of my family and ATL by next weekend!!! Much love xx
