Today we went to deception Island, which is actually an active volcano that erupts every 40 years on average, is overdue by 4/5 years now though. Is a large ring of mountains with 1 narrow passage in, this narrow passage called Neptune's Bellows is what allowed the centre to be filled with ocean water.
Did 2 landings, first was telefon bay. Probably have to say is one of the most beautiful places I have seen, striking black rocks and sand with white snow. This whole area is so dramatic looking as everything is contrasted, like looking at an Ansell Adams photo. We walked up to rim of one of the smaller craters and then along the ridge with amazing views of several other smaller craters. Was so quiet and peaceful, think maybe this is my favourite part of Antarctica.
The 2nd landing was Whaler's Bay, was originally a whaling and sealing station, later became research stations and then deserted after the last volcano eruption. Still has what is left of the few buildings they lived in plus the huge tanks that were used for storage of whale oil and fuel. There is also the massive ovens used to break down the whale blubber to oil. Could walk around them all but no one allowed to enter as declared unsafe, the inside of the buildings are piled high with snow anyway but can see bits and pieces of items left behind. From this bay we also walked up to Neptune's window, when you get to the top you are looking down on a beautiful cove.
Obviously due to the fact all the area is dead land therefore devoid of life, there is only the random penguin or seal on the odd occasion passing through.
These were our last landings and we are now heading back to Ushuaia, will be 2 days and 3 nights. Will be good to use a proper sized shower.
