Yesterday we arrived on the Island of Lewis by Ferry-a day earlier than we had anticipated as we could not get on the ferry today. There has been a four day Celtic music festival here just finished on Saturday so there must have been lots of bookings today. The ferry ride was lovely-although overcast the sea was very calm and the ferry more like a ship. We arrived in the harbour of Stornaway to cold but sunny weather. Dont come to Stornaway on a Sunday if you want to buy anything including food or go to the tourist information centre or see anyone about or find somewhere to stay for that matter. Sunday is rest day! Well the town and island seemed all tuckered out after the festival. We walked around the little harbour with its quaint fishing boats needing a bit of a clean up-but maybe they're just lovely and laid back! We walked through the town a bit and only found a pub open which would have been fine only we werent quite ready for a pint.
We drove out of town heading northish towards where we were booked in for the week (tho we were a day early). There were few B&B signs on Lewis as compared to the mainland where every house seems to run a B&B! One we stopped at had no vacancies so we called ours and luckily found that they had a cancellation for tonight.
The countryside is bare and wild and windswept with small clusters of houses dotted here and there. Northwards the next port of call is Iceland (and that's where the wind has been coming from!).
We found our B&B- a gem!! Lovely family about our age and stage with daughters coming to and fro from uni and travels. The couple are music makers- the house is full of a grand piano, violins/double bass-homely and wonderful. Our room is upstairs with a huge skylight looking out over the fields and small village. We walked down to the beach called 'Europie' which has sand almost as white as Cottesloe. We found dog to throw sticks with and climbed back onto the cliffs to walk home. Dinner was at the B&B-amazing home cooked meal. Not much more to ask for on a holiday. We stay here for a week and if we are not relaxed by then we are clearly beyond help!!
