This is our last day on Lewis unless the predicted gale tomorrow prevents the ferry running. As we have a train to catch on Monday from Inverness I am thinking positively!!
We have been saying to ourselves that our friends at home will probably not be interested in peat, however we have become 'experts'. This island and probably all the others around Britain were dependent on peat for their heating and still are to a lesser extent. All the islanders have their own peat site from which they collect and dry it in the warmer months. I would say that they need it all year round if the temperature we have been experiencing is anything to go by. The walk we went on yesterday from the village of Sgiogarstaigh along the east coast and a bit inland took us past lots of recently dug peat and some people collecting peat -photo is of Doug holding some drying peat! See it is interesting!!! We have explored Black Houses and an Iron Age house- many ruins -yesterday our walk took us to ruined stone houses and a chapel all perched very dangerously on top of monumental cliffs. doug was keen to know how you could bring up children with a cliff 5 metres from the front door. The only answer we got was 'children are pretty cluey' (we know that!).
Walk was about 4 hours yesterday (see photos from the album) so we were very glad of the home cooked meal at our B&B of couscous with local lamb and roasted vegetables followed by two helpings of Bread and Butter pudding and ice cream. There was a quiz night on at the local pub however we couldnt make the start time of 9.30pm (I guess due to the light evenings). We are going to the local dance tonight which should be fun!
