Today I realised a dream and took myself off to visit Sissinghurst the famed garden of Vita Sackville West and Harold Nicholson. I have wanted to see this garden for years and have been interested in Vita and Virginia Woolfe and their times. The history of the building and grounds is very old and seems to be well documented. The earliest buildings are from 15th Century.
The Garden is breathtaking-the album on this blog is self explanatory.
Only one complaint!! Please National Trust make it easy for non car drivers to get to Sissinghurst. Once you make it from Staplehurst Station to Sissinghurst by bus (the buses come once an hour!!), You can look forward to an uncomfortable half hour walk along a road not set up for pedestrians unless you dont pay much heed to your own personal safety. If you survive the road trains there is another sizable climb up the road to Sissinghurst proper. On the way back I noticed a path through the woods which I took (it was very muddy but better than the road!!). The signage to these various routes was VERY poor. Hard to understand when the country is apparently trying to attract tourists. Back to the bus which I thankfully caught so as not to have to wait another hour. The train trip was a restful time to think about the day!!
See the photo album for pics of Sissinghurst.
