We collected our car in Glasgow and within a short time were on the A82 driving past Loch Lomond, through the magnificent Trossachs National Park past Ben Nevis and Glen Coe and on to our first rural stop, Ballaculish. I had picked this village off the map as about half way between Glasgow and our first longish stop. We found our B&B easily and were greeted by our lovely hosts Christine and Mike. The room was great and the breakfasts magnificent. Unfortunately at this point Doug developed a flu like virus and did not feel like venturing out at all. So I went on alone making sure of course that he was comfortable and had the required medications. I decided to do a shortish walk of about 5k starting in the tiny nearby town of Glencoe. I suppose I had known about the Massacre of Glencoe but could not recall the history really at all. As I began this walk the guidebook suggested to take a side track and visit the monument to McIan Chief of Gencoe who was massacred with his men in 1692 by the order of William II. It is a hidden away place but the monument itself is quite moving. This photo is the plaque explaining the monument. We have become really interested in the old history and have 'googled it' and bought a few books as well as spent two hours in the Fort William Museum which is a wonderful treasury of ancient artifacts and historical information. As you spend more time in the countryside here you become interested in finding out about the history and can well imagine the bleakness and the intrigue that went on. Anyhow the walk I went on out of Glencoe was beautiful-I was struck by the flowers that grow naturally by the side of the road-foxgloves, Queen Anne's Lace, Acquilegias even -and the Rhododendrons which grow like weeds. There was quite a lot of uphill climbing in this walk but it was OK. It was the first I have ever done on my own and there were'nt many people around but I felt quite confident. The walk lead down to a pretty manmade Loch which I walked around. It's hard to describe the beauty of this area-every sight could be on a calendar.

Angela Woodhill Great to hear Susan! Now I want to go too. My memories have faded. Get some wool! All well here with a bit of rain for your garden. x
