We've been in Newtonmore for nearly a week travelling up from Ballachulish via Fort William last Saturday. We visited the Highland Museum in Fort William we spent 2 hours there just taking in the history. Fort William itself seems to be suffering from the GFC with many of the shops closing in the high street.
We are staying in a self catering place in Newtonmore in the vicinity of the old crofting village of Strone. We are quite high up above the village and can see across the highlands. It is quite a magnificent. There are three units plus the owner's cottage - the owners are a lovely couple who are both PhD's who seem to be partly working and partly running this place. We've walked every day along different routes from local to the Cairngorms near Aviemore. The feel of the countryside is quite 'alpine'-in fact in the winter skiing is a big tourist attraction.
The weather remains cold but great for walking with little rain. We've seen a deer in the forrest and a mole running through the grass-lots of rabbits, birds, sheep and cows as well as a giant pig and some very friendly horses not to mention the beloved Border Collies!!
Today was our best walk so far. Twelve kilometres across the moor to the next town, Kingussie. It takes in wild moorland as well as a Loch and Birch forrest as you come into Kingussie. Unfortunately my boots lost their soles on the way and I had to use my shoelaces to tie them on and finish the walk. Luckily we had found a great hiking shop in Kingussie, our destination so I scored a new pair of walking boots!
Oh, also very important-'Monarch of the Glen' was filmed in and around Newtonmore and Kingussie!
