We are finding our B&B more and more extraordinarily wonderful. If anyone wants a relaxing holiday it is here. Quite a long way from home I admit but sooo amazing. We are at 'The Decca' previously a radio communication base on Lewis. As I mentioned before the family who run it are wonderful hosts and the meals cant be surpassed.
Today we were late for breakfast (woke up at 10am due to being disturbed by Bankwest calling me at some ungodly hour of the early morning looking for Anna's phone number). I was too embarrassed to ask for the usual cooked breakfast but Douglas was not! The other guests had clearly been on time but were happy to remain and chat-this is how we pass every meal here and seem to end up taking about an hour and a half-even for breakfast. I have rediscovered the joys of meeting people from other lands when travelling and we have made acquaintances from Canada and Switzerland here. We are all happy chatterers but my husband takes the cake and makes sure there are no lulls in the conversation! Today after finally getting going we explored down the coast to the Black House Village and the Callendish Standing Stones. The Black Houses are built of stone and have thatched rooves ( very different from all the other homes on Lewis)-are located on the west coast by the sea. They were lived in until the 1970's when the people were moved into government housing. I'll put up some photos. We've been getting into the history (bought the odd book!!). There is a great Norse influence here- the people were subject to years of attack, rule and harrassment by the Vikings. Anyhow you're probably not that interested in my version of the history! We are now in our attic room reading more history-or Douglas is trying to read it to me while I am trying to write this!!
