We woke to a drizzly overcast morning. Breakfast by the pool followed by a leisurely session with the owners checking out the options for tourists on a rainy day. We searched to no avail for the umbrella we bought when in the same situation in New Orleans so decided to go for a walk anyway.
We checked out along Duval St in and out of the kitschy tourist shops and expensive galleries with many pieces we'd love to own for the fish room but they were way out of our price range. We did buy a kauri shell engraved with Key West 2013 and our names to go with the one we have from Vanuatu for under $20.
All over Key West there are roaming chickens, big roosters, skinny hens and numerous babies. The traffic stops for them when they cross the street much like you see at home with the ducks. We found a restaurant called better than sex, a desert only place that opens at 6pm so we were there a bit early to test their claims at only 11am lol
Down to the port area and we spoke to the guys from the ferry that goes out to the Dry Tortugas marine park and confirmed what I thought back in May, we want to do it despite the high price. The lady at the Blue Parrot hinted we should book with her so she gets the commission so we will do that cos she's been very helpful.
After an encounter with a giant made of sponges (see pic lol) we stopped off at B.O.s fish wagon for some excellent fish and chips, we tried two, grilled red snapper and fried mahi mahi. Both were delicious.
We had another wander along Duval St from the other side and we bought a very cool anemone wine stopper.
We took a short break back at the Parrot to book tomorrows tour then headed out again. We went to the Southern most point in the USA and perused more shops stopping to buy an awesome steel sting ray for the fish room. The chooks were out in force but by 5 most of the shops were shut or shutting so there were a lot less people.
Having heard about the daily sunset celebration we headed to Mallory Sq getting there an hour or more before anything was due to happen. We collected a cider each from the outdoor bar at the Westin and went onto their roof top bar to wait for the show. We then went for a wander along the pier to check out the stalls selling art, jewellery, doggy duds and various refreshments and the street performers doing fire twirling, sword swallowing acts, psychics, musos etc. we found where all the people had gone lol
It turned out the sunset was a bit of a dud due to cloud cover but it was still a pleasant way to end our first days exploration of Key West. So far we like it a lot, very cool laid back vibe with plenty to do.
Back to the Parrot, a refreshing swim, couple of drinks while checking emails, an easy salad dinner and we were set for an early night. We have to be up early enough tomorrow to be at the pier by 7am for tomorrow's adventure.

Dee The traffic stops for babies to cross the street? Or are those baby chooks, along with the fat roosters and skinny hens? lol
Sue Lmao baby chickens ya dill! Even I know baby humans don't cross roads alone!!
Ann You never know - perhaps you should have waited longer for when the babies were let out :)
Sue Lmao perhaps you have a point there!
