We were up surprisingly early considering last nights late finish. Checked out the waterfront area, a market and did a bit of a drive around Boston. It's a lot calmer than NYC with a lot more of an English feel to it in many ways.
We set off towards maine with no real plan in mind taking mostly secondary roads. We followed the coast for a long way slowly, at times very slowly lol passing through small towns. They are mostly seasonal towns, aimed at snow vacations in the winter and seaside summer vacations. There are still quite a few who look like they're trying to wring out the last of the summer despite the temps being a lot lower than we've had til now, maybe 20 today dropping sharply over night.
We stopped at a couple of markets for fresh fruit and veg and restocked some basic supplies eg: beer and wine lol
A lot of what we pass reminds us both of the Sth Is of NZ on a smaller scale. There's even a town with an ordinary looking river dammed with a small hydro plant on it. Well that's certainly what it looked like to us. Then again maybe it was the work of an engineeringly advanced beaver? Lol
So far we've not managed to organise a moose and bear tour, I sent off some emails asking for info from Boston before I went to bed last night but haven't had any replies :-(. We're now wondering if we should look into doing them from Canada.
Many of the trees are starting to turn but we are a bit early to see the full autumn display. Along the way we looked to the side of the highway and were surprised to see an airstrip cut into the surrounding forest finishing a few meters from a major road.
No idea why but it took 5 motels til we found one with a vacancy in the small town of Skowhegan
