Breakfast at the hotel was a total rip off so we went up the road to a buffet for $7 each, they even had half way acceptable bacon!
We crossed back into the US at the Peace Bridge with a small delay queuing with all the others doing the same. The customs guy seemed confused by our answers, why are you going to Cleveland? We are on our way to Dallas to take the car back. Why are you taking a car to Dallas? Cos that's where we got it. Why did you "get" a car from there? And on it went for a short time, he didn't get we'd had a car for 7 weeks and had been touring for that long, it was as if it was a concept he just couldn't grasp lol finally he let us go on our way.
Almost immediately we saw the price of petrol was back to what we had gotten used to in the US, about $3.50 a gallon, in Canada it was closer to $5, still not as much as in Aust but it hurt all the same after so many weeks of the US prices. Once again the motor bike riders are helmet free, in Canada they have the same laws as us and everyone wears them. In the US most don't cos they don't have to.
We spent the morning sticking as close as we could to the US side of Lake Erie passing through a lot of agricultural land, mostly much the same as in Canada, corn and numerous vineyards but also some apple and stone fruit orchards. There are a lot if golf courses here too but nothing like we saw in Canada where every exit from the freeway had signs for at least two courses.
A stop at Evangola state park was a nice break, very green with a semi sandy beach. We watched some geese cruising along parallel to the shore occasionally getting too close and running into the small waves when they sort of did a bit of a surf lol
We came across another deer sign expertly changed so it had a perfectly round red nose a la Rudolph lol we saw the same thing in Rockport.
We went through the Seneca tribal area, lots of signs for cigarettes with no ny state taxes, glitzy signs for casinos and petrol stations with signs imploring people to support them as profits go to the tribe etc
Pete decided to get as far on as we could on this leg as we could so we can take it easy through the coming areas where we have places we want to explore. We got stuck in a massive traffic jam about 7.30pm approaching Springfield, the traffic was simply at a standstill. Pete managed to wiggle across 4 lanes to an exit and between him and the GPS we got around it. The news today revealed the road was shut til after 9pm. A truck hit one of the support pylons of the Taylor-Blair Bridge.
Taking the back road turned out to be a big win, we saw one of the best sunsets either of us had ever seen, it was really gorgeous. The pic probably doesn't do it justice.
We finally settled into a motel in Dayton about 9.30pm, went to wild wings for dinner and crashed.

ann Re fuel prices. We found that the Canadian gallon was a different size to the US gallon - does that still apply and does it make you happier? :)
Sug Interesting concept Ann. In Canada they use litres so we converted to the US gallon for comparison. Either way they're both cheaper than Australia.
