Our last morning in Harlem and we had to do the shuffle one last time. The car had to be off the street it was on by 8.30am so like everyone else we went around the block and double parked in our street.
Usual routine, breakfast, pack the car and we were on our way. Being the cheapskates we are we set the GPS for Long Island with no tolls and had to go downtown to 65th St, Pete started out all calm and zen; letting others in, speaking ill of those impatient ones tooting their horns when none of us were going anywhere and then it all changed. He started channeling a New Yorker and was blocking others and tooting with the best of them lmao He's also worked out that red lights are, like the speed limit signs, only a suggestion. When doing 10 - 15mph over the limit we still have cars passing us.
We went over the East River on the lower level of the Queensborough Bridge on a two and a half hour drive to the Long Island Aquarium.
We weren't on Long Island too long when the city seemed far behind. Once off the freeway, heading into Riverhead, it was lovely, very small town like. True to his word Joe had left our name with one of his workers, Noel who quickly introduced himself and we set off on a nearly 3 hour tour behind the scenes. It was so good to see it all, having heard Joe talk at MACNA we expected quite something and weren't disappointed. It's an awesome set up, out back and in front where the public see. Noel hasn't been there long but his passion, especially when it comes to breeding fish was evident from the start. The coral frags harvested for reef gen were here, there, everywhere lol between them and the fish breeding they're hopefully considerably cutting down on how much has to be taken from the reef for the aquarium trade.
Leaving there we discussed paying tolls and cutting a couple of hours off the trip but decided we weren't in that much of a hurry so kept the GPS on no tolls we set off in the general direction of Boston. We went over the manhattan bridge strangely enough so ended up at the very southern end of the island and worked our way up to the other end through peak hour traffic. Slightly painful but here there's always something to see happening so not too bad.
We went over the Willis Bridge and that was it, no more Manhattan. With the sun starting to set we went past The Bronx, Yonkers and on towards New England.
For the last NYC nutjob of the day we have a motor bike rider on the FDR. We car drivers were all moving very slowly, maybe 15mph. This happy choppy was weaving his way along, far faster than we could and all the way he was going "wheeeeeeeeeeeee" lol
Pete just kept driving, my plan was to head in the general direction of boston and stop at some sort of reasonable-ish hour. He had other plans and before we knew it it was midnight and we were nearly in Boston. A quick net check and nearly every hotel, well all those under $250 a night, was booked out! Oops tactical error!! Finally got a room at the ramada for twice our usual nightly budget but ya get that :-( who knew so many would be here for the Red Sox - Yankee game tomorrow night?
A short 1am walk to the local supermarket, quick zap in the microwave and we were fed and in bed by 2am.
