Yesterday our host mom Grace took Kristin and I into Nairobi to purchase our bus tickets to Mombasa this weekend. I can honestly say it was nice to finally get back to Ngong after being in Nairobi...sooo many people....Tuesday is our host "brothers" birthday and it is turning 19 so Kristin and I decided to buy him a DVD since he loves watching movie. We got Ocean's Eleven....we also bought him a birthday cake! Grace informed us that no one here really celebrates birthdays...she said on her birthday no one even said happy birthday (as she gave Stanley her husband a mean look) so Brian was very excited when we brought out the birthday cake...I don't think he has ever blown our candles b/f b/c when we told him to make a wish he seriously thought for about 2 minutes before he did anything....it was fun to see how excited he was! We hadn't gotten back from Nairobi until about 8pm which was VERY late for us "mozunglu" to be out...it was pretty scarry walking back to the house in the dark.....Glad we had Grace with us....never going to let that one happen again...
Today Kristin and I had the Olympics with the kids! It was hard b/c the ages ranged from 5 to 16.....the 5 year olds had a hard time understanding what to do....anyway we had a bunch of different events and seperated the kids into 3 groups....the kids got to decide what country they wanted to be from....they choose Kenya, Canada and Ethiopia. The Kenya group brought home the Gold :) We gave everyone candy at the end and it's something I will never do again....the second I got the candy out the kids went out of control like I've never seen before. We tried t give everyone one piece and they just wouldn't stop trying to get more. It was really annoying...
After we were done with the "olympics" we got a soccer game going....it would have been great except three drunk guys came over to the field where the kids were playing and started talking to the kids....asking them if they had a lighter....when I looked over he was holding a joint and telling the kids he has a weed farm and could get us some. Then he proceeded to take off his pants and chase after the kids....At that moment I was just at a loss of what to do.....there were too many kids and we were far from the orphanage...I was afraid to yell at him b/c I didn't want to chance him getting violent so I basically just got up and told the kids we were leaving......and to think....this is just normal for them. They never look surprised by anything.
Thinking back to yesterday Kristin and I were followed for the first time to work. At least the first time we noticed we were being followed. The orphanage is in the slums so of course it's not the best part of town to be walking around in......so before we got to the orphanage we just stopped and turned around and stared at the two guys who proceeded to leave us along then We decided walking different ways to work and different times is a good thing!!!!
Kristin and I are leaving to go to Mombasa for the weekend! It's a great little town on the coast of the Indian Ocean...it will be a nice break from life in Ngong.....I'm looking forward to snorkeling, laying on the beach and enjoying a few quiet ones :) We are staying at this place called "Stilts" which is a tree house across the road from the beach.....It's suppose to be an awesome place to stay....it's 1,200 shillings per person each night which is like 17$ USD.....the only thing I'm concerned about is the local wild life. Since it's a tree house there are lots of Monkeys around....there are no screens on the windows and apparently the monkeys get in all the time!! I 'm scared of monkeys.....Kristin has promised to protect me since I've been protecting her from the spiders at our host house :) We'll see how good she really is......
