Sunday was the last day of the safari, we were told we needed to tip both our driver and cook so before we actually left for the safari we had spoken with a couple different volunteers who had already been on the trip to see what amount we should tip. They said 1,000 shilling total for the group was a good tip. ($15 USD) so before we got into the van to come home I collected the money from everyone and gave it to the driver. 6 hours later when we stopped at Gemma's house in Karen (about 15 minutes from where the other 5 of us were going) the driver came back to me and handed me the tip and said "I'm happy with you if you are happy with me" yeah having NO CLUE what he was talking about we all just looked at each other and he proceeded to tell us that we didn't tip him enough money. He started getting all worked up and said "if this is all you are going to tip then i don't even want it" we were trying to tell him that we could tip more it's just that we were in a different culture and didn't know the right amount to tip. Anyway he started getting really annoying so we all just got out of the matatu and decided we were going to find another way home. I was so annoyed at the fact that he wanted more money and it was a tip....it's not something you can tell people you want more of....anyway so me being the bold person I am I kept the money we had given him and told him if he wasn't happy with it then he just won't get anything....so he drove off....and we used the money to get a cab home......Kind of killed the end of a really good trip....
It was great to get back home that night. Grace, Stanley and Brian were all outside when the cab dropped us off and they were so happy to see us.....they acted like we had been gone for such a long time. One of the neighbors had just had a baby so Grace wanted Kristin and I to come with her to visit and give them fruit. We got to the house, held the baby and then what I was afraid would happen...happened....their cook brought out porrdage which is this really sick and filling drink....it's brown and kind of like grits only worse...it's very disrespectful to not drink it....so of course I drank it down and was like that's really good thanks haha....the cook tried to give me more but lucky me I answered no before she gave me more :) So after that one of their sons walked up to me holding liquid soap....I looked at Grace b/c I had no idea what he wanted me to do...she instructed me I needed to wash my hands...not really knowing why I put the soap on them and then he sprayed water over them and gave me a cloth to dry them on.....after thinking that was a little on the weird side the next thing that happened really threw me off....the dad walked into the living room with this big leg of meat and a butcher knife and just started cutting right there....Kristin and I kind of looked at each other with a side glance and I almost lost it......I wanted to laugh so hard but knew I had to hold it together.....next me sat a big plate of meat in front of Kristin and I and said EAT haha...I stuck one piece in my mouth and took the next 5 minutes to chew it.....I had never tasted anything like it....I wanted to throw up in my mouth a little.....haha I ended up eating like 3-4 pieces b/c Grace kept saying EAT......That's one thing I have learned about the culture here....they eat every meal like it's their last.....they think Kristin and I don't eat anything and always ask why we eat so little. On the walk home that night I asked Grace what kind of meat it was....I didn't really want to hear the answer b/c I thought I knew....and she confirmed it. It was goat.......yeah will never eat that again.....I'm thinking about becoming a vegetarian so I have a reason to turn it down if I'm offered it again....Really made me long for some good old Noa Noa :)
Yesterday (Monday) was normal....work, hand wash laundry, bucket shower....each time I'm done with a bucket shower I get excited b/c I realize it's one closer to never having to take another one haha.....and the laundry....yeah i don't mind doing it by hand...but at the same time....once I'm done it doesn't really smell clean hahahahhah...I can't wait to run everything through a machine.....maybe I just haven't mastered the art of hand washing yet haha....
Thursday Kristin, Melanie and I are leaving for Mombasa which is a great little city on the coast of Kenya. Snorkeling, laying on the beach, drinking at the bar and swimming in the ocean are helping me to get through this week of work :) Is that bad?????
