Sorry it's been a while since I last wrote. Things have been going well....hard a lot of the times but I'm getting through it. Last Wednesday was the hardest day I've had since I got here. There are two other volunteers that are working at Sidai, Allison and Jane. Allison is from the US and Jane is from London, England. UIt was great to meet the girls however they started telling us about the children's history and all the illnesses they have.....I started freaking out b/c Allison told us they just got done with everyone in the orphanage having scabies! Yeah I freaked out when I heard that....I wanted to go home right away haha....some of the kids still have it....I felt bad but right away was thinking in my mind...."no one touch me" 5 of the kids are HIV positive, a lot fo the others have Typhoid and others have worms....basically everything I'm praying I don't get. So yeah Wednesday was really hard. Thursday made up for it though. Kristin and I decided the kids needed something to play with so we took a matatu ride to Karen and bought some different games for the kids to play with. Bowling, Twister, battle ship, barbies and memory were among the different games. When we came back we set up the bowling and had a little tournament with the kids. They LOVED it. They could not get enough of it.....I have not seen them that happy since we get to the orphanage. It made all of Wednesday ok to see them that happy. Thursday night we took a cab into Nairobi with two of our friends from Ngong, Allison and Melanie. They are both RN's from Canada that are working in the local government hospital. We stayed at Ma Ma Monica's house in Nairobi. She was the lady we stayed with during orientation....it was AMAZING to be back at her house. I was so happy when I got there...I forgot how happy a hot shower, good food, a normal toilet and painted walls can make you feel.....haha Kristin and I couldn't stop talking about it. Friday morning Chaz, Gemma, Melanie, Allison, Kristin and I all left for a safari through Maasai Mara. It was about a 6-7hour matatu ride.....I can't even describe the ride there. I don't think I would ever want to go through that ever again......the roads are soooooo bad and our driver sucked....he would just fly over everything and not slow down or stop for a single thing....he seriously would make a left hand turn going like 60 MPH....At one point we had to drive down the side of the mountain to get into the Rift Valley...it was kind of like driving on the California coast....ocean on one side, mountain on the other and no where to swerve if you needed to....anyway as he was speeding down the mountain I looked at Kristin and said "My mom has a right to be concerned for me" haha I think she would have flipped out if she saw what we were doing. Anyway finally got to the camp we were staying at for the next two nights, dropped off our stuff and went on our first game run. We pulled into the reserve and in the distance saw a couple zebra's....yelled at the driver to stop b/c we were so excited....little did we know there were thousands just beyond that....It was probably one of the most amazing experiences of my life. We basically saw everything...lions, gazelles, elephants, giraffes, dik diks (yes it's named that) baboons, buffalo, wildebeests, zebras.....we hit the safari at the perfect time. It was during the migration from Tanzania to Kenya. I will post pictures as soon as I can. The computers in Kenya pretty much suck and are really slow so it takes like 30 minutes to get one picture up so I'm going to post them once we get to Ireland. Anyway...great times on the safari, the girls were all really fun, we sat around one night and drank some "Tusker" which is their local beer while playing Kings. Sleeping in the tent was good....allergies were killing me and I forgot the afrin....I'm not really sure what I was thinking there....but anyway got through it without hearing any animals outside the fence they had up. Well I have to run to the orphanage for a while but I will be back this afternoon to write more.
