Saturday 3rd March:
Today was the Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras in the city centre, a massive parade and carnival (bit like Notting Hill carnival) and 100,000 people fly in to see it! We left for the city in the morning to get a good spot but were a bit too keen as found out it didn't start untill 7:45 pm! We walked round the shops, tried a few things on but didn't buy anything - saving it for when we're staying in the city. Found an international food court and had lunch there. Whilst wandering round we discovered some strett performers who had managed to gather quite a crowd so we set up to watch. It was two overweight Chinese men who started off with a bit of mime and then developed into some attempted body popping and break dancing. The grand finale was...wait for it.... blowing up a glove through his nose! As you can imagine we were pretty impressed. Just as we were getting up to leave, two rather tasty men appeared to start another performance. They were two acrobats with amazing bodies and the stunts they did were incrdible (and they were only wearing boxer shorts). One of the stunts was one of the guys lying on the floor and he lifted the other guy up with one hand untill he was standing - the only acrobats in the world who can do this! Don't worry we have pictures.
The parade finally came round and very interesting to say the least. It was so packed we could barely move all up the streets. We managed to squeeze our way in between two rather butch lesbians but decided not to stay there for too long as they were pretty full on and American! The first act to come down the road was Dykes on Bikes - and quite a few were naked. More extravagent gay floats followed: Guys with hair bands covering their dinkle, a 'mature age gays' bus and men dressed as women in lots of impressive costumes, a real eye opener to say the least. Soph was lucky enough to have a woman touch her bum as we pushed our way through the crowds.
Christian is also here but unfortunately didn't get to see him as it was so busy, hoping to soon though. Took us about 2 hours to get home, two bus rides with naked men in glitter sat next to us. We got a taxi from our bus stop who very kindly stopped when we said we only had $8 and so we had to walk the rest of the way, getting lost. Finally got home though and met two nice ladies who had also been to the parade who were staying in our room.
