Mossley Hill v South Durham & Cestria
The 3 horse race for the Northern Combination title is only a few furlongs from the finishing line, with a number of tricky fences ahead for the main protagonists. A very tricky hurdle today for SD&C today at Mossley Hill who are always a tricky proposition on their small, lop-sided track.
SD&C kicked up the hill and played a lot of nice football without ever really testing the Mossley goalkeeper, Jennings was marshalling the back four well with Banks, Jordinson and Lawson all playing the ball out into midfield with success, who in turn would get the ball forward but we just couldn't get that break that would settle us. Mossley Hill did come closest to scoring with a superb shot from 25 yards superbly dealt with by Alex in goal.
HT Mossley Hill 0-0 SD&C
After a half time pep talk the girls came out determined to grab that all important first goal, and continued much the same way as the first half, playing some nice football but not really penetrating or testing the gk. The longer this went on the more pressure builds up on this predominantly u17 side and sure enough the sucker punch came in the 57th minute. After losing possession on the edge of the Mossley area, the ball found its way down our left where the Mossley player crossed a great ball over to the striker who laid it off for her colleague to hit a great strike over Alex in goal.
The girls were one down and desperately went searching for the equaliser. Cestria went close a couple of times in this period after building up a head of steam but just couldn't force the ball home when, Mossley were awarded a very dubious penalty in the 80th minute after claiming the ball hit Jen Jennings' arm from about 5 yards away when it actually hit her in the breast area. Jennings surprisingly did offer to show the ref exactly where it hit her but he politely declined, saying he was a married man!
After some 'encouragement' from the sideline the girls struck back immediately after a great ball from Meg Lawson, now in the left back berth, found Yasmine Hardy who lobbed the keeper for a great finish in the 82nd minute. Our equaliser followed in the 86th minute from Zoe Ness' speculative long range lob catching the gk off her line. Cue celebrations amongst the girls and travelling fans. If we could've played another 10 mins I dare say we would've got the winner but probably a fair result in the end.
FT Mossley Hill 2-2 SD&C
With Chorley beating Bradford City, the girls have 2 games left which they must win. If they can do that then only Bradford can catch them by winning all four of their own remaining games.
