Stockport v South Durham & Cestria
After a break of 3 months (which seemed like forever) the girls finally managed to get a league game on today, with Stockport the opposition. Stockport are at the wrong end of the table but have been unlucky with a few of their results this season so a tough test was expected. As for SD&C, sitting in 2nd place, the points are just as important in the push for promotion to the Northern Premier League.
The girls kicked off on the 3G surface at Stockport's impressive venue and showed their intent from the start, taking the game to their hosts. But for SD&C's profligacy in front of goal they could've been in front by a couple of goals. The defence were in control, marshalled well by Jen Jennings, dealing with the sporadic Stockport attacks quite comfortably but that goal just wouldn't come. Probably the best chance falling to Becky Hanratty after a sweeping move resulting in a slide rule pass from Lauren Briggs with Hanratty just poking the ball wide.
HT Stockport 0-0 SD&C
The girls kicked off with intent second half and laid siege to the County goal but still with no success. By now the girls were getting frustrated and County sensed this, possibly having the best spell of the game with numerous breakaways, coming close to landing that sucker punch.
However the girls found a second wind and finally got the goal they deserved in the 80th minute. Lauren Briggs broke through the midfield and unleashed a ferocious shot that the keeper could only parry, right into Deb Stanmore's path who cooly slotted home. The sigh of relief could be heard back in Durham apparently.
Soon after the girls added a second after good work from Zoe Ness who crossed for Becky Hanratty to tap in.
FT Stockport 0-2 South Durham & Cestria
Good result in the end against a resolute Stockport side who, if they play like that the rest of the season, will easily climb the table.
