Went to school as our usual routine every morning but once we arrived we were told that we weren't needed in secondary school as it was the exam week and that we could go to primary school instead. I was disappointed because it would have been nice to be informed about this in advance. (Thats the Sri Lankan laid back attitude!) on the bright side I was interested to find out what it was like in the primary department so we went there. We were put in two separate classes, my class was a nightmare! They all were not focused, it was like they just did their own thing. I decided to work with children who were keen on learning. There was a lovely girl who wanted me to teach her how to draw flowers, so I drew some and she copied it colouring it in proudly. How sweet of her, mainly the boys was just being a nuisance so I patiently waited until they stopped. I told them I was a volunteer from England and that i was here to teach them, it did not bother me if they wanted to play as they would be missing out in long term (I explained it in a very simple way) they all suddenly paid attention to me and said they were very sorry. (mission accomplished!) So I asked them all to draw their favourite superheroes such as spiderman, superman and batman for the boys while for the girls it was Cinderella, snow white and Scooby doo! They had to learn how to spell these words first before drawing so in a way they learned English as well discovering their artistic side! Unfortunately for me the teacher came and politely asked me to leave, I thought it was nice of her to ask me politely but I also felt used in some ways. We asked the deputy headmistress whether there was anything we could do, she said no, hmm ok... (i was annoyed as she did not seem remorseful about not letting us know that we weren't needed) We went to maharagama bakery and cheered ourselves up with a chocolate doughnut! Yum. Went back home, I felt a bit tired and had a headache coming on so I had a 45 minutes nap! It was so refreshing when I awoke feeling great! Few moments later Lucy came to our room and asked us to go with her for the swimming coaching job as Beth was unwell. SL volunteers must be in pairs at all times so we went with her. Basically we just sat there for 2 hours watching her coaching the kids how to swim. Once it had finished we went back home and I just chilled out for a bit, doing my scrapbook. I had a nice catch up with Rosie talking about all sort of things! We agreed we would meet up once I'm back in England.
