Sri Lanka Youth centre awaits us! We took the same method of transport as yesterday, once we arrived we decided to wait in a cafe, once I saw a Milo poster advisement, I was tempted to have one! To my delight I saw some Milos in the fridge so I bought one for 40 rupees, then everyone bought one too!! What a good influence I am! :-) Sophie took us to a room where we will be having our further training, it was interesting as we mixed with another hearing volunteers doing role plays, learning all about the various areas of mental health, special needs and what would we do in these circumstances. I thought to myself that the tutor was a bit patronising because he said in these exact words 'deaf people ears (hearing aids) are like glasses' and when we were doing a role play he said perhaps it was the best if there weren't two deaf volunteers, instead implying one deaf volunteer with one hearing volunteer to do that role play. Poor Duffy and Stephen was like "Erm...okay" but luckily Sophie said it was cool and that she would interpret what was being said. I felt good, serves him right and he was blandly rude, talking with his mobile phone twice during the training. I realised at that moment it might be like this for the rest of 8 weeks as I was warned that Sri Lankan people are not 100% aware of deafness, the community we have....(I think its funny now though!) When it was done, we were getting ready to go to Mount Lavinia when we were summoned to the director's of the youth centre office. The office was amazing, very contemporary and filled with beautiful colourful pictures on display. He gave out the impression that he was somewhat the VIP attitude with his gold rings on his chunky fingers, well ironed shirt with his hair slicked to one side..he showed us screenings of the video he made showcasing the individual potential in the disabled and how we could overcome the stigma. He was somehow a bit rude but not realising that he was...finally after dropping strong hints that we had to go, we were on a Tuk Tuk to paradise! We stepped off and there it was, Mount Lavinia hotel, it was gorgeous with sleek marble floors, reflecting pool with views of the ocean! We paid 1000 rupees each to use the facilities which is around £5. I changed in my fringed swimwear and jumped in the pool! Ahh it was finally the glimpse of paradise since we arrived on 1st October....we took some pictures, sunbathed, ordered a sex on the beach cocktail and just relaxing while we watched the sunset go down (as seen on my blog photo) Around 6pm we had mini meeting with Sophie who told us to be prepared for anything that comes in our way and some useful information for the next 7 weeks of working at the deaf school. We headed off back to homagama intending to eat at the restaurant called 'Poori Hut' (Apparently its good as recommended by previous volunteers) but it was shut! By that time all our stomachs was rumbling, I was hungry so we all agreed to go to pizza hut! It was 10 minutes drive away but it was worth it! I had potato wedges, tomato and cheese pizza costing me about 600 rupees = £3.50! Cheap as chips! I was really elated to have some English food finally but the bread tasted a bit too doughy and heavy compared to England's bread. (it didn't bother me, anything was better than the spicy curry!) We had great fun, just 7 of us. 10.30pm we arrived back home and we all just dived in the bed! That best feeling when you are really full and just drifting away to sleep is blissful! :-)
