Morning was a 10 minute lesson slot each to practise teaching, I was just grateful at the fact I was teaching to 6 people instead of a big group or something like that! Sophie said we had to pretend that we were teachers at the school, how would we approach the children? what form of teaching attitude? I taught them past, present and future tense saying that it was aimed at the older children which was in grade 10, 11. I got told that it was great but that even the older children in grade 11 might not understand it. I decided to create a list of different ideas and I opted to start with alphabets and colours as first ice-breaker and to evaluate their different levels of learning so I can adapt to them. Once we all finished we went to pack our bags, ready for the weekend in the jungle! I was looking forward to it especially after the other volunteers who just kept saying that it was fab! We left around 2.30pm in a minibus, it took us 2 hours to arrive, in that period of time we endured rough roads, turning right and left, going up and down in the hills, stopping off at a food city shop to buy water, alcohol (i didn't buy any as 6 of us deaf peeps felt no need to get drunk to have fun, we were perfectly happy with the company!) and I couldn't resist buying a milo shake! I also had a very interesting conversation with stephen about our travels, our dreams and general things. The jungle was incredibly green, very fresh and I wondered with the sun how the heck did they manage to achieve having bright green leaves?! I was in a room with Lucy, Emma, Beth, Rosie, Molly and I shared my double bed with Frankie. We unpacked and had a nose around, then Sophie told us to get changed as we were going to natural water pool (more like a small lake) by the river (well it is in the river but it was split by rocks) Anyway it was refreshing and the calm hype around us was ruined after the sheer realisation there was some possibility that the leeches would latch on you. Safe to say after that, I literally got out of the river literally straight away! I got showered and put on some make up on just like all other girls who were making themselves beautiful! Our dinner was a BBQ! I dreaded that it would be spicy but it wasn't! Phew! The food was delicious, potato stew with pieces of juicy chicken with a bit of rice. That night was risqué, we all played a game called 'I never' whom has never done something doesn't drink but who has done something has to drink therefore exposing themselves, for an example, one volunteer said she had been with another girl, we all were amazed! Appears so that the quiet one is the one to watch out....I am not going to go any further than that! It was really good fun, we all laughed non-stop! After the game with a lot of revelations, we had a great talk with volunteers and we all got to know each other more. We talked about a lot of things but one particular thing was that some hearing volunteers were interested in hearing some stories of the barriers we face everyday, why we are happy with who we are etc. I found out some great things about hearing volunteers, for an example, will is Australian, he had been in Kenya before coming to Sri Lanka. When I glanced at the time, it was 2am! I had to get up at 8.30 for breakfast then white-water rafting at 9.30 so we all went to bed. (not before I tucked in my mosquito net!)
