This is the day we go to see my school where I will be teaching for the next 7 weeks, Ratmalana school for the blind and deaf. We got the local bus 138 direct to maharagama(it's much bigger than homagama, it got a KFC and loads of choices in clothing department) which took around 20 minutes then once we arrived, we visited the Sri Lanka youth centre which is where some of the hearing volunteers will be working at. It was interesting as the youth centre looked modern and clean, it was such a different contrast to the typical poor hygiene and decor in Sri Lanka. Next thing we were on a bus 182 to Ratmalana. 50 minutes later we finally arrived, I felt really hot and sweaty as there was loads of people on the bus and the body heat around is not so appealing for me! I was quite concerned that I was expected to travel this distance every morning and afternoon to work and back....it was a bit tiring to do but luckily I had an idea, TukTuks! it's everywhere in Sri Lanka! It depends on the costs though as buses was only 20 rupees each way. When we entered the school premises it was breath-taking! It was a beautiful school, maintained brilliantly and seeing these children running about, laughing and dressed very well. Soon we were introducing ourselves to the headmaster, he was really lovely! Very friendly and seemed really happy to have us here to help, so was the deputy headmistress who was also present. It was a comforting moment for me when I thought to myself i could see myself being here for 7 weeks. The children was incredibly excited to see us and kept saying where was Aliya, I told them that she was home in England and that I would pass on their thoughts to her, (I was pleased to see that Aliya had made an impact on them in a good way) After an eventful day, we all went back to maharagama for something to eat, we ended up in a cafe which was clean (good enough for me!) I ordered a egg roti (I decided to try something different as i promised Asher) A Roti is simply just a pancake wrapped with fried egg inside so it was quite nice....Sophie kindly took us shopping! We went in a couple of shops with air con, phew! There was a few of clothes I liked but i opted not to buy anything until around nearer the time I jet off (depending on my budget really) we all went back home alongside with another hearing volunteers, I had some dinner...just rice actually! I was tired so I had an early night. I lay on my bed thinking about today, How I really felt and what I was going to do.
