I was wondering how much would the iphone4 would be in Sri Lanka so I checked the currency converter as you can see from the photo, I was gobsmacked to discover its actually a lot of money for these people who live in Sri Lanka....some things we all take for granted! Just like Fiji, that poor family living in that shoebox house by the forest! It's easy to forget how lucky we are back home...it was my second day of teaching at the Ratmalana school, It was interesting as I started to get to know to the staff, I didn't want them to feel like I'm butting in but they were lovely, very welcoming, and they kept asking questions about me, where did I live, and did I have a husband...(Asher, this is not a hint ok?! :-P) The classrooms are categorised by numbers and alphabets, for an example 11A, 10B, 10A and 9C etc. They are split in three groups per grade to accommodate their level of learning and the prospects of achievements without holding others down. One downside of this is the massive range of age difference each class! One class had a 17 years old and a 13 years old, it saddens me in some ways because how do the older children feel being put in a class like that? I would be humiliated....The level of their English are varied, some students has a good knowledge whereas some others has very poor English skills, you practically have to teach them something really basic such as colours. One thing irritates me is the fact some students just copy down things from the blackboard and when I ask them what did it say, they replied saying that they don't know. I realised that was the normal way for them as I often saw teachers just write things on the board and some of the students abilities was low therefore it was literally impossible for them to understand what was on the board. I think it's a shame some teachers don't bother to make sure that they actually understand. Aw well....I'm very grateful I had a good education, I told Molly I felt like I wanted to fly some of the bright students to England and help them but the reality is you can't do that.
