Long day today! Much hurrying and scurrying around as the ABC University prepares for the President of Liberia to visit their campus on Sunday as part of their Independence Day celebration. New concrete was laid today to try and get sidewalks finished, (a new improvement for the campus since its reopening after the war.). Everything was going great, although late, when rain decided to make its presence known! The workers had already been taken home, so 4 of our team went back out at 10:45 at night, in the rain, to assess damage, and try to prevent more. It is 11:30 almost and they are still out smoothing where areas got pitted because of the rain, and covering it with tin so it won't get messed up again. Major bummer!
As for the literacy team, another day of our workshop and book club. Both went very well. Most teachers are excited, even when we give them much homework to do! We only have really one day left to get done what we need to do, as Thursday morning will be a wrap up day along with handing out certificates and post testing them on the list given on the first day.
Phonics, while being readily available in the USA, has been essentially non-existent here, so this is new stuff for them. Our prayer is that they will go forth, continue to practice, continue to grow themselves as educators, and therefore improve the lives of their students.
LTL will be providing a box of 150 books to each school once they have worked to get their students using phonics, so we spent most of our afternoon and evening going through hundreds of books. Literally! We have about 3,000 we won't even be able to get sorted through entirely on this trip! Each school will have a small library, and the community will have a children's library in the near future, something we take for granted back home! Thanks to the many people who donated books during the drives that were held, the goal of getting books into the hands of children that haven't had that opportunity before! Many more books will be needed in the future to fully equip the community library, and continue to expand school libraries of those schools using the phonics they've now been equipped with. Check the LTL web site from time to time to keep up to date!
More later!
