We arrived safely in Monrovia, Liberia last night. As our plane was coming in for its landing, the view from the plane was amazing! My fist thought upon exiting the plane was, 'wow, not nearly as hot as 8 imagined it would be!'. But we've hit here in the rainy season, which helps to keep the temperatures down. So, while it is still humid, it is the sweltering oppressive heat I was expecting.
The beach house, right along the Atlantic shoreline, was a nice respite after numerous hours on 3 different planes. What a beautiful view of a majestic ocean.
Del and Becky Chinchen, our hosts, have been wonderful. Pizza for dinner our first night. Not exactly the type of food I was expecting, but very tasty. Lebonese pizza is a bit different than what I have come to expect in Arizona, but pizza is pizza!
We stayed in the ELWA guesthouse next door, and fell asleep to the sounds of rain and the ocean.
We are currently on the bumpy road to Yekepa. We've been told that the road is in much better shape than usual as it is being improved to some degree for the president's trip to one of the nearby towns in observance of their independence day. I'm reminded of the many roller-coaster rides that I have been on as we continue our 7 or 8 hour trek.
As we drive I am struck by the lush green landscape that is a result of the many inches of rain this country gets each year. But I am also struck by the evidence of poverty everywhere we look. Shells of destroyed and discarded buildings are evidence of the results of war that ravaged this country.
