Our last day in San Diego. Noms and Jenny were up at some crazy hour in the am to go an dqueue for the Dr Who panel at Comic Con leaving Alice and I to deal with the remaining packing and checking out of the hostel. We were up at about 8am and spent the next hour rushing about picking up the washing, packing the remaining crap and stripping our beds. THankfully Jenny was staying another night so we piled our cases in the corner of the room and left them there as getting them downstairs would have been interesting. After checking our we pottered over to have some breakfast and then headed back uptairs to the two most comfortable armchairs EVER to await the return of the Tennant obsessed twins. At first we were watching The Big Bang Theory, but after not too long we both had curled ourselves up into our chairs and were happily dozing the morning away.
Eventually Noms and Jenny returned from thier adventure to find Alice and I still asleep at the top of the stairs and after waking us up it was decided we would go exlporing via the bus and train stations to buy various tickets. Alice suggested we head towards Seaport Village which she had discovered on her walk home the night before. Our first stop however was the mall once again as, after some online research to discover the boots I wanted were £180 in the UK, I had decided that I wanted a pair afterall so off we headed towards Nordstrom.
Ironically after all the thinking that store didn't have my size but while we were tehre Jenny tried on the pair that she liked and ended up buying them, so we didn't leave empty handed. We also discovered that they could order and deliver the boots for free to a US address so as we departed Jenny and I discussed a cunning plan of getting the boots sent to her final hostel address if I couldn't find them in LA. After Nordstrom we browsed a few more stores before heading out via Areoposatale so Jenny could get a new messenger bag - which I had to be talked out of myself - before we wandered off towards the Greyhound station so we could get our tickets to LA for the morning.
Our next stop was the Amtrak station for Jenny to purchase her rail pass. The station was an unexpected beauty, very spanish in design and completely random in its surroundsing - although we discovered more buildings in it's style in Seaport Village later. I did wonder if it had once been a church. After a while Jenny reappeared, ticket in hand, and we began to wonder towards the seafront. As we walked I was amused by a car park sign that read 'commuter train parking', espechially as there wasn't a single train parked there ;) Soon enough we weer by the ocean and wondering along taking in the views.
It was absolutely beautiful down there and, although hot, the sea breeze meant it was a lovely temperature. I could probably have let myself get completely lost there except for the constant interruption by rickshaw drivers who just kept bugging us. Our wondering eventually lead us to Seaport Village which is a tiny arts, crafts, food, music and dance bubble of stores in old spanish buildings. Not only architectually beautiful but also a lovely and friendly environment to be in. We explored some of the shops but were all quite hungry, eventually discovering a little cafe towards the centre of the area where music and dancing were happening just around the corner. The whole feel of the space was relaxed, it was somewhere you really could just taken in the sun and enjoy the atmosphere all afternoon - truely lovely. Eventually we continued our wandering along the seafront and decided we'd all like to lay about in the sun for a while so found ourselves and nice patch of grass to do so.
We found our patch of grass on a chunk of land that formed the outside of a marina so it was beautifully quiet. All four of us settled down, put music in our ears and enjoyed the sun. Noms and I managed to actually fall asleep and Alice got lost somewhere in her music. We stayed there a good while, at least an hour, but eventually we began to re-enter the world realising we needed to head back, eat and sort out moving our stuff to Rach's for the night. As we started to head back the others decided to use the toilets near where we were while I waited outside. In a matter of seconds the girls reappeared with an appalled look on thier faces - turned out the cubicles had no doors on them, so they quickly retreated and we went in search of the other facilities we had found eariler that did have doors.
We slowly meandered towards the hostel and were suddenly faced with the beginnings of the Comic Con crodws heading towards us so we detoured via a hotel car park and then thier swimming pool which was a small cove of paradise that seemed to have no way of telling if you were a guest of not and was easily accessable - this info was flied for later use on our next trip to San Diego! As we cluelessly wandered through passages to find a way out we stumbled accross Rach and gang in search of food and eventually found our way out to roads we recognised and were greeted by the welcoming sight of Ralph's. Although we had food for dinner we decided it'd be good to pick up lunch for our travels the next morning so we pottered in. As we headed back to the hostel Jenny needed to grab something so the three of us kept walking to the hostel to wait outside for her return. While we were waiting someone left the hostel so we slipped inside and waited on the stairs.
Somehow while waiting on the stairs we managed to get into random conversations which lead to talking about case weight which then lead to my genius idea of seeing if the hostel had any scales - in a random case of luck they did and so by the time Jenny returned we were armed with scales to weigh our bags so we knew if we'd need to take any out into another bag. This of course was nowhere near as simple as it sounds with the bags refusing to balance on the scales and the weight readings being nowhere near what they actaully were so we eventually gave up, deciding that we'd deal with it later. Time was getting on and so dinner was made using up our left over veg and dinosaurs and soon it was time to drag ourselves and our stuff to Rach's.
If someone had thought to capture the moving of stuff on video hours would be spent laughing at it. 4 people (Jenny wonderfully offered to help), 5 fairly heavy cases, a couple of backpacks, 2 rather large flights of stairs (thankfully we were going down them so gravity helped), and a 10 minute walk through semi busy San Diego streets! You get the picture, it was hilarous. Thankfully we, and our junk, survived the trip damage free and were soon inside Rach's condo via a wonderful lift. I think it was around 9:30pm by this point. It was now time to say goodbye to Jenny who was off to meet Beth in Seattle in the morning. Having had her as part of the group it was going to be very odd for her to no longer be about.
At Rach's we repacked some of our stuff into a hugh duffle bag we bought at the Greyhound station (after seeing if Noms would fit inside it - which she almost did). While we did this everyone else settled to watch some Fraggle Rock as there was much excitement on discovering that i had purchased it. Soon enough however we all headed towards bed as everyone had been up stupidly early that morning and Noms, Alice and I had to be up at 5am to be at the bus station for 6am to check in our bags. We had created wonderful bed on the floor using spare douvets and blankets and soon enough we were away with the faries.
