Our first full day in San Diego, we got up around 1030am and mooched about getting ready to head out towards Tijuana, Mexico. We finally headed out around 1330 and wandered to the Trolley (Tram) stop to head off! The ride was incredibly quick, around 30-45 mins, and we were at the border. It was much hotter there than San Diego due to the lack of sea air and still cloud free!
Getting into Mexico was stupidly easy, we literally just walked into it through a turnstile and past two guards and that was it, sheer insanity! I still cannot believe just how easy it was. Tijuana itself was an, well, experience, from the minute we stepped out of the boarder we were bombarded with people trying to make us enter their shops and buy things. This wasn't in a pleasant 'please come in', hello vibe, it was a scary 'oi women get in here' vibe. We were constantly finding people heading towards us being overly forceful and refusing to take no for an answer even when we were walking away. The worst bit was when two children just wouldn't stop following us basically begging us to buy something from them. I think in the end we managed to be there for about 30 mins before we decided to start heading back, trying desperately to not retrace the same route we had taken on the way into town. Still we managed to meet people trying to get us to buy things or who were insulting us. The best of these was the man who told us we 'needed to get to the beach' commenting on our skin colour. I think that sealed our need to leave - so it was a good thing we were almost back at the border! The other thing we were constantly offered was cheap alcohol, it was scary just how much was offered. I guess they are used to making money off tourists who want to get trashed. So Tijuana, not on my list of places to re-visit/spend more time in. Getting back into the USA was a little bit more security conscious. Though not excessively crazy like when we flew in, they literally just looked at our passports and waved us through. Overall an experience we weren't in a hurry to repeat.
After riding the Trolley back to downtown we decided to have a bit of a wander around downtown and check out the area on our way to the supermarket, browsing a couple of shops on our way. The supermarket itself was a whole new exciting experience - seriously sooo many exciting types of food in such crazy sizes, and the ice cream, my god the ice cream, flavours, seizes, prices - all kinds of heaven. Surprisingly we only left with sensible things that would feed us for a few days - even if there was a bag of chicken dinosaurs included!
After shopping we headed back to the hostel for dinner and then spent the rest of the evening chilling out, catching up with internet land and uploading photos to Facebook, which was nice and chilled, just what we needed after a truly crazy week before!
