Yesterday we went to Mt Maunganui which is a town about 15 minutes away from Tauranga. The weather was beautiful - really sunny and warm, with a light offshore wind (according to Katy). We spent the morning on the beach, watching the surfers and paddling in the surprisingly cold sea. We then had lunch on the sea front before climbing the Mount. The Mount is only 232 metres high but the walk was very steep and we had to stop a few times to "admire the view." The view from the top was spectacular! On our way home we got an ice cream (passionfruit in a home-made waffle cone) and booked a trip to Auckland for this weekend.
Today I had my first day on the wards. All of the staff are really friendly and I think I'm going to really enjoy my placement here. We both get Fridays off which means that we can explore the North Island in our weekends. We plan to go to Rotorua next weekend and the White Island the weekend after. We've decided to book a bus tour for the South Island (depending on exam results) as there are some really good deals on in low season.
For some reason I can't upload photos on the hospital computers so I'm afraid you'll have to put up with a really long slide show when I get back!
