10/4 Valle Fertil
We got up very early to catch a bus to Valle Fertil and we were hoping to be able to get a cheap tour of Luna Valle later the same day. Tours of the Valle commence from both San Juan and Valle Fertil but there is a very large price difference. We arrive for lunch and are met by Indio. Indio is a born entertainer, he is indigenous to the area and also speaks Spanish, English, German and a little French. He offers food and explains possible tours. After so much traveling and buses we decide to save the dosh and skip the extra tour of another great looking Valle and spend the day on the blog and planning. Now we have a plan, stay an extra night, enjoy the asado that night, go to Luna Valle on the 11/4 and head to Mendoza at 3:30am on the 12/4 (our only real option to get to Mendoza).
The hostel is amazing and had many people from all over the world. The staff were great, teaching me about maté and having interesting conversations with both of us about fernet (popular digestif similar to Jaegermeister)and other Agrentinian things.
One downside for us (which is a common Argentinian custom) was the asado starts at 11pm! This was a great experience as everyone sat near the open BBQ for hours while the meat and vegetables cooked. Just after 11pm we started to eat different cuts of beef, one after the other with all different sides. Fresh tomato salad, roast eggplant, capsicum, potato, zucchini, all with melted cheese and local wine. All this for $15 - who needs breakfast?!
We spoke a lot of Spanish and even more Spanglish with people from all walks of life. The hostel is adding rooms so we even had a couple of local builders!! This made for an unforgettable night. There were two people we spent alot of time with, Andres who is from Mar del Plata Argentina and who speak a little more English than our Spanish and Jessie, an American chica who had a little more Spanish than us. It was amazing and helped our Spanish and speaking confidence so much.
Indio in his true entertainer style produced a guitar and played songs in Spanish, English, French and even a very popular Portuguese song. It will be a long time till I will forget bellowing out a song with Indio and Andres. After this and the continued wine consumption, a game called Sexto-matic is produced. This is where you are given a card and you have to act it out, a charades for sexual type words but in Spanish. This is really hard since we don't know what people are yelling out. Sarah got fully into the guessing after a round or two (and a lot of wine) in what can only be described as Sexto-matic turrets!
The game fizzled out, and we watched a very intoxicated French girl get helped to the bathroom by possibly the smallest guy present. After this we thought we would head to the dorm early as not to write ourselves off for tomorrow. It kept going for hours we were told
