18/3 El Chatén
We got on another bus from El Calafate to El Chaten to complete two hikes. To hike the to Lago Torre and see Cerro Torre and Lago de Los Tres and see Cerro Fitz Roy, both climbing Mecca's.
We arrived at a lovely small 'bed and breakfast' with 2 rooms, Hospitaje Mi Rincon. We pick up a snack and don the hiking boots again, covering the bleeding parts of our feet (no joke). Sarah sensibly decides to hike the 5 Kim's to the first lookout, eat lunch with me and head back to scope out the town, our bus situation and relax and read in a nice room we bought and to save the pain for the 30km tomorrow. I decided to hike to the base to see the glacial lake and another glacier. We missed the lookout and overshot by a km, but at the end of the hike we were both happy. The views were great and everything was clear, a rare even around here. After the 28km hike and minimal lunch and breakfast, we both wanted a big simple dinner and an early night.
We booked tickets to Bariloche and found out the German couple would be on our 27hour bus, least we know someone!
I know there is a trend but these are specials I buy, but a massive burger with 1 litre of beer for $65ARG was too good, I'd been craving a burger. We ran into the Sydney couple Jemima and Tristan from the pantanal/bonito during dinner, sharing beer and stories.
19/3 Fitz Roy
Another early rise in the dark to head out and take on Fitz Roy, ready to notch up over 150km in this hike (only 80km with full pack). First hour is long, then it's easier, but the last hour is up and it hurts. This is a scramble up rocks where 30minutes is a relentless scramble, climb or balance. The view is amazing, worth each step. Not long after we arrive the clouds come in. I feel for all the suckers we met on our way down, it's hard work to not get it all.... Get up earlier slackers!! Haha.
Thankyou Patagonia!! We could not ask for more amazing weather.
Xxx
Ibuprofen, Lamb stew, and red wine to fix the knees and settle in... And yes it was another special
20/3
get up early and get on the bus at 3:50am. Goodbye beds, hot food and walking, hello 27 hours of lots of people in close proximity. This is not one if the nice busses just to clarify, this one was hard work. It was a long trip which was late, but got delayed by the 3+ hours we say at night broken down, everyone clapping when we finally got going again. Everyone on the bus went to sleep, but tom who is the only one that knew we were so much later as we stopped at a service station to finish the fix job. Other than that we were very glad to carry a food bag around, we ate all our stores and more.
