Our stop for Rome was a recommendation from the Harris'. It is on the edge of Lake Bracciano. From here the campsite would give you a morning lift to the railway station and from there you can catch the train into Rome central. So that is what we did. The first trip in to Rome was to St Peter's square and a look around the Vatican. St Peter's was a stunning building and we were impressed by the bascillica. Following that we walked around the vatican city to the Vatican Museum to see the Sisten Chapel and the Vatican museums before lunch. This was to be a mistake as the walk around the museums is long. The chapel itself was underwelming by the time we reached it. The family was feeling drained and we stopped at the closest resturant for a rather dull meal (but it was required as survival food.). We returned to the train station and go the train back to Bracciano. Getting back to the campsite proved to be more difficult as the bus was not going to run for another 3 hours, and the taxi service did not exist. We looked at the map and discovered a path down to the campsite. A couple of wrong turns, some backtracking and a wander some undergrowth and we eventually reach the motorhome.
The next day was spent in the local town as it was market day and we want to see what was on offer for the locals. A number of food bargins were found and we came away feeling pleased with the days shopping. The rest of the day was spent on the campsite.
Following the rest day we returned to Rome and took a tour bus around the city, hoping off at a few places. The Pantheon was an inspiring building and the Barcelona Fans (The football team had just won the European Champions Cup in Rome the night before) added to the crowds at the Spanish Square.
Arising the next morning we caught the train again to Rome and spent the morning walking around the Collusem and the Ruins of the Roman Forum. A truely interesting time (at least for David). We finally walked out of the ruins and found (for us) the best resturant in Rome and had a very good and reasonably price meal. We returned to the campsite and found we had new neighbours in the form of large American Campervan owned by a couple of Brits that lived near Rome. A good chat was had and we settled down for the night.
