Okay, it was a very busy and eventful day which left alot of us overwhelmed by the hospitality and appreciation of the people of Mazatlan.
The day started with several of us leaving the hotel to the acquarium where the trucks have been stored. We drove the trucks and buses from the aquarium to the hotel. Spent some time washing the parking lot dust from the fire truck. Then we formed up the vehicles for a parade through the streets of Mazatlan. We drove through the streets with the siren sounding. Lots of reactions from the people. People were yelling thank you and giving us the thumbs up. It was nice to fly the Canadian Flag through the streets of Mazatlan.
Arrived at City Hall and were immediately swarmed by the various groups that were to be the recients of the vehicles. Within 10 minutes, most of the people in the area were waving Canadian flags and wearing Canadian pins. The Bombaros (firefighters) were all over the fire truck.
At a formal ceremony in the Council chambers, we were officially welcomed to the city of Mazatlan by the Mayor. We were all presented with plaques and gifts from the city. It was a large media event. We then left the council chambers for pictures with Mayor and the presentation of the keys to the various groups. They were all excited and appreciative.
In true Rotary fashion, it was then time to eat again-at a great restaurant hosted by the Mayor and his wife. We had three seafood appetisers, tacos, and then the main course of fish and rice. Then we walked back to city hall. There were lots of people around the vehciles and we spent about 30 minutes meeting with Rotarians, Canadians and Mexicans as they wanted to know more about the project. They were all amazed at the efforts and the importance of the donations.
Then it was back in the trucks to return to the acquarium in a convoy. Pepesan rode with Murray and found the fire truck siren. All through the streets of Mazatlan the siren rang- and echoed- and hurt ears.
Pepe and Lorena invited us to their home for coffee- which meant more food.. The mayors wife attended and brought food and we met the mother of the exchange student in Grande Prairie.
Most of us made an early night of it and some were in bed early- except Glenn who went out....
Tommorow will be meeting with various recipients of the vehicles.
