Ko phi phi... We had heard big things about this place and everyone was excited to get there... It lived up to expectations too... After a few days at least!
Arriving in sweltering heat, ko phi phi has no cars or roads because it's so small so we had to walk to the other side of the bay which we were told took about 10 minutes. It's very easy to get lost in phi phi!! All the lanes are small and very similar looking.. But soon the "roads" started getting slightly bigger and shops more spread out.. Then suddenly we came accross the worst smell... Human poo.. And it was so strong and pungent everyone immediately felt sick... The source was a sewage pond about 100meters squared full of s***... And our hotel was just the other side of it! Our hearts sank as we got closer and walked along the path parallel to "poo gardens" until we eventually reached phi phi dreams our guesthouse.. It was no dream. The string smell still in our noses and having carried our backpack for about 20 mins none we all felt like crying! We had not expected this after everyone raved about this paradise island!!
Even when we eventually got into our room the smell didn't go as the extractor fan led out to above poo gardens so instead of fresh air it simply brought in the dreaded smell.
After a couple of days though and having to ignore the smell the island itself was very beautiful. It was nice to not be getting shouted at and beeped at by motos and cars! And the island was so small you kept recognising people as we stayed there longer. We went for a night out to the Irish pub which was followed by going to rolling stones bar where a local band were playing covers. Abi at this point was very drunk and soon started to grab the mic off of thd singer and sing along! It was hilarious.. And everyone was so drunk it didn't even matter!
Then on one of the days we took an island tour to go see maya bay made famous of course from the film the beach. It looked similar to the film, but also quite different.. During the day I had tried out snorkelling for the first time and loved it! Even though I'm scared of fish I managed to swim with whole schools of them... I think it's because they were small and brightly coloured!
All in all if it weren't for poo poo dreams our hotel this stay would have been perfect!! X
