Today was the first day of the trip that the four of us were split up for more than a 1/2 hour. Ellie, Luke and I toured the Camp Nou stadium, the home ground of the FC Barcelona football team. FC Barcelona is very important to the people of Catalunya. During the years of Franco (the Spanish dictator who ruled for almost 40 years and died in 1975), Catalunyan culture (their language, flag, history) was repressed by the government in Madrid. The only way Catalunyans could celebrate their culture was through their football team. That is why the team's motto is " Mes que un club", which is translated to "more than a club." After the tour we headed back to the apartment and picked up Amy and went to Montjuic. It is the hill that overlooks Barcelona to the south. We took a cable car to get to the castle at the top which the kids liked. The castle that tops the hill offered some great views of all of Barcelona. Also on Montjuic is the Olympic stadium from the '92 Olympics, and the torch that the guy shot the arrow to ignite. We headed back down the hill and went on a short "treat walk." We followed Rick Steves' suggestions for good candy shops. We finished the night off by heading back to the beach for a picnic and swimming. The water was great as the waves were the largest I have ever experienced. They were so big that there were people surfing. Ellie, Luke, and I had a lot of fun. The ocean is not Amy's type of water. As we were washing up at the beach, we met a college student from Elmhurst (my hometown). Back to the apartment to get ready for our last day.
