We were all set to get going early to Cordova, but when 8 am rolled around we decided we were too tired. There was a 12:30 train so we opted for that. Instead I ran along the riverfront and across the river and everybody else slept in. Had a nice breakfast/ lunch and caught the train. It was the first time the kids were on a train so they were excited. The trip was only 45 minutes and they were a little disappointed. Andalusia (the region we are in) is full of olive and orange trees, as well as sunflower fields so it is nice country to look at. We arrived in Cordova and immediately headed for the Mesquita. Cordova was the capital of Moorish Caliphate for 400 or so years. The Moors were Muslims from north Africa and the Middle East who ruled Spain for a long time and were finally kicked off the peninsula in 1492. The Mesquita was their great mosque. When the Christians reconquered Cordova they kept most of the mosque intact, but stuck a church in the middle of it. It was very impressive. Parts were dark and simple with rounded Islamic arches and then there would be this bright ornate structure. I did not know what to expect so when I walked in, it kind of took my breath away. After 3 hours in there we walked around the city for a while, had a pleasant meal on a peaceful square, and caught the train back to Seville. Tomorrow we head to Tarifa by bus. If there is no Wifi (or as the Spanish pronounce it weefee) you will know why I did not update.
