Our first full day in London!
We met up with my parents, sister, and the boys at the statue of Churchill in Westminster, right near Big Ben. The plan was to take a boat cruise from there to the Tower of London. It was a beautiful day and the cruise on the boat was nice. Once at the Tower, Amy and I decided to go on a little date while the rest of the crew went into the Tower. We walked over to Whitechapel and took in that area. We went to the Spitalfields market, took is some of the Jack the Ripper lore, bought lunch for a homeless guy who asked (???). It was cool to walked through the the vintage shops, markets, and food stalls on Brick Lane, a predominantly Bangladeshi neighborhood.
We then headed back to the Tower to wait for the rest of the crew. We rested for a little bit and then walked down to the River Thames and do some mudlarking. Mudlarking is looking for old things during low tide on the river. I really got to know the mud part as I slipped on some muddy concrete and got my shorts all muddy. Once we met up with the whole crew we went back down and did some more mudlarking with the kids (no one fell this time). We found animal bones, old broken clay pipes, and pieces of Victorian pottery. It was great to have a graduate in archaeology with us to help us understand what we found.
We finished the day by walking across the London Bridge (it did not fall down…) and finding dinner. We ate dinner at a decent fast food chicken place and then called it a day.
Tomorrow: Highgate cemetery and whatever adventures that brings.
